the space in between
Starting from a place of proxemics, the Space In Between explores the manifestation of interaction and isolation. By adapting the typology of the hut to a spectrum of programmatic needs, spaces for socialization and seclusion are carved out of a larger volume. These huts are encapsulated with a quilted ETFE façade that uses transparency and light to create a connection to the external world while maintaining a state of separation from its precise form. Moving vertically through the space occupants from larger, more communal spaces (a coffee stand, a gallery, an auditorium) to smaller, more intimate spaces of connection. The approach to the fenestration of the huts creates a variety of light-experiences, playing with experiences of compression and expansion and the influence such spatial changes on occupant connection. The addition of a ramped labyrinth also creates an opportunity for reconnecting to the physical self and could serve as a site of further sensory interventions—either aural, visual, or thermal.
